London riots: 17-year-old boy detained

London riots: Darrell Desuze detained for Richard Bowes killing

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-17738958

Summary:
Darrell Desuze, 17-year-old boy, has been detained for eight years for the killing of Mr Richard Mannington Bowes. Mr Bowes was a 68-year-old pensioner.

Darrell took part in the London riots on August 8th. He was seen on CCTV smashing windows, looting shops, throwing missiles at police and wheeling rubbish bins into the street so they could be set on fire.

During these riots most people were afraid to go out but not Mr Bowes. He was out amongst the rioters preventing fires to spread. When Mr Bowes was trying to stamp out a fire he was punched by Darrell. That punch made him fell on the pavement hitting his head. Mr Bowes suffered brain damage and died.

Fact: Desuze's mother Lavinia Desuze, 31, was jailed for 18 months at the same court for perverting the course of justice.

My opinion:
The boy was 16-years-old when he took part in the riots. Where were his parents?! He is now 17 and his chances of a good future are gone. His mother also got jailed because she destroyed the clothes Darrell was wearing that night. I understand that a mother protects their child that is instinct but when your son kills someone you should understand that he has crossed the line.

I am happy the boy got what he deserved. The riots were bad enough but killing someone is even worse. Hopefully he will learn from his time in jail.

Do you know his motives? I agree with you that he got what he deserved. If you do the crime, prepare to do the time. But I do wonder why he did it. But then again it doesn't really matter, murder is unforgivable.

I was really shocked by this article. The murderer is so young and it is not shure if he deliberatly killed this older man. I do not think so. It is all very tragic. The fact that the man fell and died makes the boy a murderer and therefore lost all changes of being a part of society again.I do not think that jail will do him good.On the other hand if it was my father who had been killed I would have been happy that the murderer got what he deserved.

I agree with dmvns that it is not sure whether the boy murdered the man or whether it was an accident. The boy should get a punishment, because he should not have pushed the man, especially since he could have known this could have large consequences. On the other hand, could a boy as young as this one know that someone could die from such a fall? I find an eight year jail sentence a very high penalty for someone who did a foolish act in the heat of the battle.

It is just awful when someone so young does this. Is this person just a bad person? Has society ruined him? Or his parents. We will probably never know the real reason, for this gruesome act. Unless it really was an accident...
